LVHHN Nurses and Other Caregivers are Honored with Friends of Nursing Awards During National Nurses Week

Lehigh Valley, Pa. (May 9, 2008) - Martina Oswald-Remaly of Germansville has worked on the open heart unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network (LVHHN) for 21 years. While attending the funeral of one of her patients, she talked with the funeral home greeter, Jim Raynock, 75, of Emmaus, about the patient. Raynock said he also had heart surgery and attributed his survival to his nurse. All he could remember was her last name: Remaly. With tears in her eyes, Remaly told him she was his nurse and still carries in her pocket a travel rosary he gave to her.

Oswald-Remaly and Raynock recently were reunited at the Friends of Nursing Award Celebration where Oswald-Remaly received the The Fleming Nursing Caring Award for the care she provides patients like Raynock. Thirty-three caregivers and four care teams from LVHHN received their awards at the May 8 celebration, held during National Nurses week. Themed "Timeless Tales: Our Stories of Care," the celebration honored caregivers and the stories they help write every day while providing exceptional care to patients. The awards are part of the Friends of Nursing Program, which helps fund continuing education, professional development and research opportunities for LVHHN nurses to enhance patient care.

"Our caregivers are the reason Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network stands out among other hospitals for patient and family care," says Terry Capuano, R.N., LVHHN's senior vice president of clinical services. "They have proven that by earning the Magnet designation twice from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. We are the only Magnet hospital in the area and are among less than 5 percent of hospitals nationwide to hold the designation that recognizes excellence in nursing care."

Here are more stories from Friends of Nursing award recipients:

Nancy Kinzli of Bangor: A few years ago, Kinzli was a Friends of Nursing award donor, helping to honor LVHHN clinicians for their exceptional care. She was so inspired by them, she decided to become an occupational therapist, certified in the treatment of lymphedema (severe swelling in the arms and legs for which there is no cure). She has organized a support group for patients with lymphedema and fundraises for patient supplies not covered by insurance. Kinzli helps patients accomplish tasks like putting away dishes - big feats for patients suffering from lymphedema. Kinzli received the award for Excellence in the Delivery of Rehabilitation Services.

Susan Eckhart of Laury's Station: She works with patients who have received organ and tissue transplants, starting in 1991 when the program began. Now in a management role, she cares for patients and oversees an education plan she developed for new employees, ensuring they have the latest knowledge on new technologies and care strategies for transplant patients. For four years, she has helped raised money for Gift of Life which promotes donor tissue and organ awareness. She and her colleagues participate in the organization's annual Dash, Run and Walk in Philadelphia. The first year, they raised funds to rent a van to attend. This April, they rented a school bus to accommodate everyone. Eckhart received The Allentown Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association Award for Excellence in the Care of Organ Transplant Patients.
